Update: Forward progress stopped in Herman Fire in Benicia, containment at 100%

BENICIA – Firefighters have stopped forward progress in a quick moving vegetation fire that started in the hills above Benicia in Solano County Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Benicia Fire Department, what has been dubbed the "Herman Fire" started burning in the area of Lake Herman Road and Channel Road around 5 p.m. In less than 90 minutes, the fire tore through more than 100 acres.

The fire prompted a response by Benicia firefighters and Cal Fire crews, which brought in aircraft and water tenders.  

As of about 9:50 p.m., Cal Fire announced the fire has burned 115 acres and is 80% contained. The agency announced that firefighters would be in the area for the next several hours to strengthen containment lines and to put out hot spots.

By Thursday morning, Cal Fire was reporting that the fire was 100% contained.

Cal Fire crews were also battling a fire in several miles away in Cordelia, near Red Top Road and Interstate 80. Known as the "Red Fire," the fire has burned two acres and is 50% contained as of about 6:35 p.m.

The cause of the fires have not been determined.
