Man In Custody After Claiming To Have Bomb On Benicia Bridge, Forcing Closure
BENICIA (CBS SF) -- The Benicia Bridge completely reopened early Saturday following an incident in which a man threatened to jump off the bridge and claimed he had explosives in his pickup truck.
The California Highway Patrol said the bridge was deemed safe and completely reopened at around midnight.
On Friday at 7:15 p.m., a man identified as Rodney Brinkerhoff, 54, of Benicia, stopped his pickup truck on the right shoulder of the southbound side of the bridge, called 911 and reported he had a bomb and was going to jump off the bridge.
Officers arrived at the scene, and both sides of the bridge were immediately shut down. The northbound side of the bridge was reopened around 7:45 p.m.
A negotiation team with the Solano County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and was able to convince Brinkerhoff to surrender, according to the CHP.
An explosive ordinance detection team from the Walnut Creek Police Department also responded to the bridge and concluded no bombs or ordinance were present at the scene after an extensive search.
Brinkerhoff was taken into custody, and the CHP was continuing to investigate the incident.
