CHP Identifies 2 Men Suspected Of Climbing Bay Bridge Tower
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – California Highway Patrol officials on Monday released the identities of two men who were arrested Sunday after allegedly climbing to the top of the tower on the Bay Bridge's eastern span.
Danil Grigoriev, 18, and Robert Canales, 23, were arrested Sunday on suspicion of unlawful access at a vehicular crossing, general trespassing and public nuisance, CHP spokesman Officer Vu Williams said.
Grigoriev was also arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and Canales for allegedly aiding and abetting, Williams said.
CHP officials started getting calls just after 3 p.m. reporting two men climbing the bridge. They appear to have used the bike path to get to a cable that led them to the tower's tip, Williams said. When officers arrived, the men were on their way down.
Williams did not know why the men made the climb, but said there was no vandalism and they did not appear to be involved in any protest.
The incident caused some traffic delays as drivers began slowing down to watch. One lane was closed for around 15 minutes while officers took the climbers into custody, Williams said.
