Suspicious Package Triggers Major BART Delays

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A suspicious package discovered at BART's Powell Street station triggered major delays on all transit lines heading into Wednesday evening's rush hour.

San Francisco police wrote on Twitter shortly before 2:15 p.m. about the discovery of the package and issued a shelter-in-place order for those in the area around Market and Fourth and Powell streets.

BART officials also halted service to the station for more than hour while members of the San Francisco police bomb squad examined the package. After x-raying the package, it was determined it was not a threat and the station was reopened around 3:30 p.m.

However, transit officials said delays would linger for the San Francisco trains running to SFO, Millbrae, Daly City and the East Bay directions.

San Francisco Municipal Railway subway trains also bypassed Powell station, according to Muni officials. Passengers experienced delays for street-level bus routes as well.
