BART Stations Reopen After Early Morning BART Fire Injures 3, Prompts Major Delays

(CBS SF) -- All BART stations are now open after a fire on a train closed multiple stations in Alameda County earlier Thursday, according to BART officials.

Crews have been working to remove the train and repair the tracks where the fire occurred at 4:38 a.m. on the last train of a three-car train between the Coliseum and Fruitvale stations in Oakland, BART officials said.

The fire prompted the closure of the Lake Merritt, Fruitvale, Coliseum and San Leandro stations, as well as the connector to Oakland International Airport. As of 8:50 a.m., all station reopened.

KCBS' Tim Ryan is on scene and says he saw 3 people transported for injuries at the Fruitvale station. One the asthma victim and two others who tried to break out of the train because of the fire.

The front of one of the trains was covered in soot from the fire.

BART officials initially said service would likely be disrupted through the morning commute, but BART spokesman Taylor Huckaby has since said the repairs were going more quickly than expected and that service is expected to resume by 9 a.m.

Huckaby said Alameda-Contra Costa Transit buses are helping to take passengers between the stations that remain closed.
