Attorney General Kamala Harris To Run For U.S. Senate
SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) -- California Attorney General Kamala Harris plans to announce on Tuesday that she will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Boxer.
An advisor to Harris told several reporters, including KCBS and KPIX political reporter Phil Matier about the decision Monday.
Earlier Monday, it was learned Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom took his name off the list of potential candidates.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and billionaire Tom Steyer were also considering bids for the seat.
Sen. Boxer announced last week she would retire from the Senate after her current term.
KCBS has also learned that East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell is now looking at entering the race, as are former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Congressman John Garamendi and former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher.
Two former Republican state chairmen, Duf Sundheim and Tom Del Beccaro, have thrown their name in the hat as well. Other possible Republican contenders include Neel Kashkari and Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearingen.
