Antioch Man Found Dead In Contra Costa Canal Linked To Missing Person Case
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- Police released additional details Friday regarding the recovery of a 34-year-old man's body after it was found Thursday morning in an Antioch canal, including that it may have some connection to a missing persons case.
Antioch police said it was a citizen walking along a stretch of the Delta de Anza Regional Trail in the early morning hours when that initially saw a fully clothed body floating in the Contra Costa Canal.
After the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was alerted around 8:45 a.m. of the body near Antioch Community Park by James Donlon Boulevard and Nightingale Drive, crews initiated a recovery operation.
Antioch police, Contra Costa Water District and East Bay Regional Park District police also responded to the scene.
The area was cordoned off while a coordinated effort began to bring the body out of the water, police said. The fire district reported that the operation took around an hour to complete.
The body was taken by the Contra Costa County coroner's office, who identified the man as Antioch resident Wesley Caldwell Jr.
Antioch police said preliminary information indicates the case matches a missing persons report on file.
Antioch Police Department "is not ruling out any options" in the case, its officials said.
The case is still being investigated and no further information is being provided at this time, police said.
