Ancient Artifacts Stolen From San Francisco Antique Shop

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A burglar broke into an antique store in San Francisco's Jackson Square, and made off with several artifacts dating back to ancient Greece.

The items were taken sometime between August 8th through 11th from Foster-Gwin Art & Antiques located near the Transamerica Pyramid.

The taken artifacts include various Greek cups and containers dating back to the sixth century B.C. Also stolen were two Japanese work boxes from the early 19th century. But, the most valuable of the relics stolen is an amphora, a ceramic container, from Corinth that is decorated with panthers, a goat, a swan, a bull and a lion. The vase dates from 625-to-600 B.C. and was selling for $24,000, the Chronicle reported.

A total of $50,000 worth of items were taken during the burglary.

The owners of the told police the items were taken while the building was undergoing construction and didn't realize they were gone until they took inventory.

There was no security video that capture the theft.
