Amtrak Commuter Train Strikes, Kills Person On Tracks In Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- A person was struck and killed by a Capitol Corridor train in Santa Clara Friday afternoon, according to an Amtrak spokeswoman.

Train 542, which was traveling from San Jose to Sacramento, struck a trespasser on the tracks just south of the Santa Clara station, near Lafayette Street and Agnew Road around 4:30 p.m., according to Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.

The person was killed and the Santa Clara County medical examiner was on the scene, Graham said.

There were no injuries to the 19 passengers on the train.

The collision has blocked the tracks and is also affecting ACE train service, Graham said.

The coroner was expected to release the train and allow traffic through the area to resume soon.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and BART are both honoring Amtrak ticketed passengers, Graham said.
