TripAdvisor officials said the awards are based on 12 months of reviews and opinions of world travelers and an algorithm, which generated the winners.

The algorithm took into account the quality and quantity of reviews, according to TripAdvisor.

"The Travelers' Choice Landmarks highlight some of the world's most iconic, must-see attractions that have won over the TripAdvisor community," TripAdvisor's chief marketing officer Barbara Messing said in a statement. "Travelers can experience colorful history and culture at these award-winning sights."
