6.1 Earthquake Rattles Northern Japan
HOKKAIDO, Japan (CBS SF) -- Northern Japan was shaken by strong earthquake Monday, about 30 minutes after a similarly strong earthquake hit the Indonesia-Philippines region.
The 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 9:08 a.m. Pacific Time just west of Hokkaido island, 46 miles south of Rishiri Town and 610 miles north of Tokyo.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake did not post a tsunami risk.
About 30 minutes earlier, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck an island in north-central Indonesia, just south of the Philippines.
While both quakes occured on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, the two were not related, according to the USGS.
