4-Year-Old Boy Who Fell Off Cliff At Bodega Head In Intensive Care
BODEGA BAY (CBS SF) -- A 4-year-old boy who fell off of a cliff while visiting Bodega Head with his family on the Sonoma Coast on Monday afternoon is in serious condition at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland.
Hospital spokesman Kevin Kimbrough identified the boy as Sebastion Johnson and said he is in the intensive care unit.
Sonoma County sheriff's deputies responded to the Sonoma Coast State Beach at 3799 Westshore Road in Bodega Bay shortly before 5 p.m. Monday to help fire and emergency crews rescue the boy, Sonoma County sheriff's Lt. Al Vernon said.
The boy's mother said her son fell off a cliff as she was walking with him on a trail, Bodega Bay Fire Protection District Fire Chief Sean Grinnell said.
The boy was with his parents and a sibling before the incident, Vernon said.
Within 39 minutes of arriving at the scene, rescuers repelled 238 feet down the cliff using ropes to where the boy was conscious and crying, Grinnell said.
Fog prevented helicopter crews from airlifting the boy from the beach. He was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, then transferred to the hospital in Oakland.
Grinnell said the boy suffered "traumatic injuries" and broken bones.
Personnel from Cal Fire, California State Parks and helicopter crews from the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the rescue.
