4 Dead After Mustang Plunges Into Gilroy Embankment

GILROY (CBS SF) -- Four people are dead and another is injured after a car went hurtling into a creek near Gilroy Tuesday evening.

A 1999 Ford Mustang crashed into a ravine off Leavesley Road around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the car was driving eastbound on Leavesley Road and speeding when the driver lost control, skidded and rolled down the embankment several times.

Someone who heard the crash called 911. Investigators said there were three women and two men that appeared to be under the age of 30 in the car.

Everyone died except for the driver. He was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose with major injuries not considered life threatening.

The skid marks were what led officers to the wreckage of a Mustang that was smashed beyond all recognition.

It's unclear if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Leavesley Road has reopened after being closed for six hours.
