5 Big Sporting Events That Couldn't Top The Ratings Of The Women's World Cup Final

(CBS) - The United States' win over Japan in the Women's World Cup final was the most viewed soccer game in the history of American television.

The 5-2 victory Sunday gave the Americans a record third title.

The game was seen by 26.7 million viewers. Fox said Monday its English-language coverage was seen by an average of 25.4 million and NBC's Telemundo said its telecast averaged 1.27 million. That's a big number for any sporting event. Here's a list of recent big games that couldn't hit that number:

Game 6 Of The NBA Finals

A lot more people where watching Sunday than tuned in when the Warriors clinched their first NBA title in 40 years. According to Yahoo, Game 6 had 23.3 million glued to the TV. And that number was hailed as the highest mark since Michael Jordan was still putting on rings.

NHL Finals Game 6

The Blackhawks drew big, big crowds to televisions in the Chicagoland area. But at a 8.16 national viewers, per SB Nation, the Stanley Cup chase couldn't compete with Canada's latest sports export.

The Masters

The PGA says a whopping 14 million watched Jordan Spieth crush the field at Augusta. A huge year, but not even on the green compared to the 26 million plus watching Sunday's game.

World Series Game 7

For those of us in the Bay Area, it's hard to imagine anything matching the excitment of a do-or-die World Series game vicory. But nationally, Carli Lloyd and company outdrew the third Giants crown with 23.5 million watching that one, per Forbes.
