Mountain Lion Sighting In Gilroy Park

GILROY (CBS SF) -- Police were warning Gilroy residents of a possible mountain lion sighting on Friday afternoon, a police sergeant said.

The sighting was reported in a creek area adjacent to the ranch side of Christmas Hill Park around 12:15 p.m., Sgt. Pedro Espinoza said.

Officers were dispatched to the area to notify people in the park's vicinity and schools in the immediate area, Espinoza said.

Police conducted a thorough search but did not find the wild cat, he said.

Community members in the area are reminded to be wary of their surroundings since they are near a mountain lion habitat, according to Espinoza.

Anyone who encounters a mountain lion is advised to not approach or run away. Make eye contact, speak in a loud voice and try to appear larger in height.
