3-Year-Old NorCal Cancer Patient Gets Wish To Be Construction Foreman At San Francisco Building Site

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A three-year-old Northern California cancer patient who loves his toy trucks and construction equipment got his wish to work with the real machinery at a building site in San Francisco Tuesday.

Renzo, who suffers from a kidney cancer known as Wilms' tumor, was construction foreman for a day at the site of the Trinity Phase III project on 8th Street just south of Market.

"Everybody loved every minute of it. Everybody was looking forward to it," said construction worker Mike Duran. "Every operator out there was just having a kick in the pants."

The Seaside resident's fascination with construction toys, along with his firefighter father's extensive tool set, has been a way for Renzo to cope with his cancer treatments. "This was an amazing therapy for both of them," his mother, Crystal, told the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"Renzo has loved construction trucks since he was an infant, and will be able to see all of these incredible machines up close, riding in the cab, using the controls—this wish is the one thing his parents say helped him keep his mind off of treatment " said Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Executive Director, Patricia Wilson in a press release.

At the Trinity project Tuesday, Renzo helped operate heavy machinery include a dirt hauler, crane, manlift, and helped out on a concrete pour.

He'll also left his permanent mark on the project by making handprints in concrete.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation worked with Swinerton Builders construction firm to bring Renzo's wish to reality Tuesday.
