3 Die In Car Crash On Interstate 680 Off Ramp In Benicia
BENICIA (CBS SF)— Three elderly people have died in a car crash on an off-ramp of northbound Interstate Highway 680 in Benicia Tuesday afternoon, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.
The crash was reported around 3:40 p.m. on the Lake Herman Road off-ramp from northbound Highway 680, CHP Officer Rick Weaver said.
Weaver said a Kia Spectra containing the elderly victims had a minor fender bender with another car headed the same direction. Both vehicles were going to take the Lake Herman Road off-ramp when they collided, Weaver said.
KCBS Traffic reporters said the Kia continued off the interstate after the collision and rolled several times onto the grassy area alongside the off-ramp, before landing on its wheels.
According to CHP, two victims are from Vacaville. They did not say where the third victim was from. The names of the victims have not been released.
All three occupants were wearing seat belts and the Kia's air bags deployed, Weaver said. The man and a woman were in the front seat and the other man was in a back seat, Weaver said. The Kia sustained major front-end damage.
The off-ramp was closed until about 6:20 p.m., according to the CHP.
