2 people including juvenile girl critically hurt in fire at Pittsburg apartment complex
Two people were severely injured in a fire at an apartment complex in Pittsburg on Monday morning, officials said.
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District reported the fire at about 8:20 a.m. on the 2100 block of Crestview Drive and said it had gone to a second alarm.
Two unconscious patients -- an adult male and a juvenile female -- were rescued from the burning structure suffering from smoke inhalation, according to fire officials. They were transported to a hospital and are in critical condition, Contra Costa Fire Assistant Chief Dominic Ciotola said. A third resident, a male, jumped from a second story window but did not report any injuries.
Firefighters got the blaze under control by 8:44 a.m. but crews remained on the scene. Fire officials later confirmed that the fire started on the first floor.
People who live in the complex tried to help before fire units arrived.
"The locals were trying. They were breaking into the fire extinguishers to try to help, and within ten minutes the fire department got here," said Marcelino, a neighbor who lives nearby. "They're kind people, I wouldn't expect that to happen to them."
Con Fire said the apartment was a total loss and at least one adjacent apartment has smoke damage. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
