17 Million Twitter Reactions During Most-Watched Debate In U.S. History
NEW YORK (CBS/AP) -- It wasn't just a record number of TV viewers who were checking out and talking about the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Nielsen says social media was abuzz, too.
Nielsen reports there were more than 17 million Twitter interactions during the verbal showdown. The tweets involved 2.7 million people.
Monday night's face-off between Trump and Clinton set a record as the most-watched presidential debate in U.S. history.
According to Nielsen, a total of 84 million viewers watched on their televisions at home. Not included in that number were the people who watched at bars, parties and restaurants, so viewership was actually higher.
The previous record of 80.6 million was set when former presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan debated in 1980.
Meanwhile, TiVo provided some insight as to what debate followers thought important. It says the moment during the debate that caused more people to press "pause" then "rewind" on their TVs came during the end. That was when Trump said he would "absolutely support" Clinton if she is elected president.
In the past, Trump had indicated that if he were to lose, it would be because it was "rigged" against him.
