1 Dead, 1 Injured In Shooting At Sunnyvale Strip Mall
SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) -- An altercation in the parking lot of a Sunnyvale strip mall early Thursday morning lead to a shooting, which left one man dead and another in critical condition, police said.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 2 a.m. on the 900 block of East Duane Avenue in the parking lot of the Fair Oaks Plaza strip mall at East Duane and DeGuigne Dr., police said.
Sunnyvale DPS spokesman Capt. Shawn Ahearn said officers who arrived found a 21-year-old man dead in the parking lot, and then a short while later found a 24-year-old man who had been shot and injured. He was hospitalized in critical condition but was expected to survive his wounds, Ahearn said.
Sunnyvale police officers said a deadly shooting was rare for their community. The scene was still closed off hours after the early morning shooting.
It's believed the shooting was prompted by some kind of altercation in the parking lot, said Ahearn.
According to police, the suspect or suspects took off after shooting the two victims.
Investigators were trying to determine whether the people involved may have been at the Knockout Sports Bar and Grill or the La Ronda nightclub, both of which are located in the strip mall where the shooting occurred.
"That's part of our investigation," said Ahearn. "We don't know if they'd been in the bar and came out, or what their association is with the bar."
Investigators spent the morning combing the homicide scene, looking for witnesses and trying to identify the suspects behind the homicide.
Ahearn also said that the two victims were not involved in a shootout between groups.
"We don't know how many guns were used, or who had a gun," said Ahearn. "We do know the two victims did not have any weapons, and did not, were not involved in the shooting back in any way. They were the victims of a shooting."
No suspects have been identified. Investigators are looking for any surveillance video from businesses in the area..
