Yuba City Catholic Church Volunteer Accused Of Child Molestation

YUBA CITY (CBS13) — A Yuba City Catholic church volunteer is accused of child molestation in Arizona.

U.S. Marshals say Hermenegildo Huizar-Vera, 51, is the focus of a sexual assault case.

Church leaders at St. Isidore Catholic Church refused to go on camera, but say this is not the only church involved.

The Sacramento Diocese confirms Huizar-Vera played piano and taught music at the Yuba City church.

"He always sing at church here for the Lord that's mainly when I met him," said parishioner Gracie Ella Madera.

Court records indicate he was arrested at his Marysville home last week and is held at the Yuba County Jail. He faces child molestation charges in Pima County, Arizona, but federal investigators aren't revealing the details of the sexual assault case, and there's no word on similar allegations in the Central Valley.

He's also volunteered at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marysville.

The diocese says it does background checks on all staff members and volunteers, and that Huizar-Vera had a spotless record.
