Worker Killed In San Francisco Light Rail Tunnel

SAN FRANCISCO (AP/CBS13) — A construction worker was hit by a steel beam and killed while working on a renovation project inside a light rail tunnel in San Francisco.

Mayor London Breed says Saturday that the employee was killed while working on the Twin Peaks Tunnel Project.

Officials say the worker, whose name hasn't been released, was a signal technician who worked for Shimmick Construction, which has an office in Suisun.

Breed says San Francisco police will conduct an investigation and officials have also notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

She says the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has also stopped work on the project.

The agency was retrofitting the tunnel, which connects the city's West Portal neighborhood to downtown San Francisco and replacing tracks and drainage systems.
