Woman's Car Stolen From Sacramento Planet Fitness Parking Lot

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Recent thefts at Sacramento-area gyms have police warning people to watch their valuables.

The Planet Fitness on Mack Road was hit twice in the last week. One woman's purse, keys, and car are now gone.

"I don't know what I'm going to do," said Maylee Vang. "I'm stressed out."

Vang used to work out at Planet Fitness but recently canceled her membership.

"My car was parked right here and then my car is gone," said Vang pointing at the empty space in the lot, "I don't see my car so I'm just shocked."

Vang locked her purse and keys inside a locker while she exercised.

"Look up and my lock is gone," she said.

Someone not only took Vang's stuff but her life.

"I work so hard seven years, eight years just to pay my car and support my family and my kids," said Vang, "and now it's gone."

The mother of three says the toughest part was telling her youngest child.

"He also had his car seat in there too and he just started to cry and said he wanted his car seat," said Vang.

"It sounds like this victim did everything she could to secure her property in the locker," said Traci Trapani with the Sacramento Police Department.

But it wasn't enough. While police look for the stolen 2011 Toyota Highlander, they're reminding people to leave valuables at home.

"Don't bring in large sums of cash. Don't bring in all your credit cards," said Trapani.

"You just don't think your stuff is going to be stolen," said Anessah Jamal.

She also works out at the Mack Road Planet Fitness and says she's taking note of the police department's advice.

"You're attention is somewhere else like you're working out," said Jamal. "You're not really focused on what you put in the lockers."

A manager with Planet Fitness says it posts signs warning people that it's not responsible for lost and stolen items. And that the company is sorry about the incident.

People at other Planet Fitness locations have also reported stolen items. Police say a woman was arrested last week and is charged with some of those incidents. It's not clear if the cases are connected.
