Woman arrested in Carmichael after dog found in trash with throat cut

CARMICHAEL – A woman was arrested and later released in Sacramento County after authorities say she's accused of cutting her dog's throat and throwing it in the trash Wednesday night.

Deputies responded to an apartment complex on Manzanita Avenue in Carmichael around 9 p.m. Wednesday after a report that a dog was found in a trash can with something tied around its neck. The caller also reported the dog had a cut around its throat and was alive.

Deputies said witnesses told them that the dog's owner lived in the complex. Deputies said they identified the dog's owner as 41-year-old Danielle Killian, who was then detained.

Killian lived alone with two dogs and a cat, saying she was the sole care provider, according to authorities.

She told deputies that she felt her life would be easier if she only had one dog and cut one dog's throat on Monday, deputies said.

She then placed the dog into a shopping bag and put the dog in the trash can at her apartment complex on Tuesday, authorities said. The dog was then found the next night.

The dog was taken in for medical treatment and animal control took custody of the dog.

Deputies recovered a knife they say was presumably used in the incident. She was arrested but granted release on her own recognizance by the courts.

Detectives could not locate the cat and fear other animals she cared for may have suffered abuse. Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff's office.
