West Sacramento Urban Farm Site Breaks Ground
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — West Sacramento's urban farm is now open for business a month after volunteers laid the groundwork for it.
On Friday, the Urban Farm Initiative broke ground on its pilot site near Fifth and C streets. It will serve as leasing space for new farmers who don't have access to land.
The city will lease the land for $1 a year, and will also provide tools to farmers with the hopes of them selling their produce to local restaurants.
"We really want to be a food hub, we want to grow food in our community, said Center for Land Based Learning executive director Mary Kimball. "We want to utilize these spaces that have been devoid of anything for many years, and we want to make them vibrant again."
The urban farm fills a vacant, city-owned lot, and the group hopes to expand the program to other vacant lots in the future.
