Vanden High's Football Coach Accused Of Embezzling From Athletic Fundraisers
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) – The head coach of Vanden High School's football team is being accused of embezzling thousands of dollars.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, a school resource officer at the school was tipped off earlier in August about a school employee suspected of embezzlement. Detectives soon identified the suspect as 42-year-old Levon Haynes – Vanden High's football coach and campus monitor.
Police say that Haynes embezzled thousands of dollars from athletic fundraisers over the course of several months.
Tuesday, detectives arrested Haynes along the 2900 block of Shasta Drive during a warrant search. Detectives also searched a home along the 2500 block of Shorey Way.
Haynes is listed on Vanden High's website as the varsity football team's head coach. According to his biography, Haynes was a 1990 graduate of Vanden High and has been the head coach for the past five years.
The Travis Unified School District released a statement Wednesday afternoon on Haynes' arrest, noting that they are conducting their own investigation into the matter.
"The District commenced its own investigation as soon as it learned of possible intentional misconduct by one of its employees. That employee was immediately placed on administrative leave and that leave continues," the school district wrote in their release.
Haynes was booked at Solano County Jail on an embezzlement charge. He has since been released from custody.
