UC Berkeley Students Plan To Rally Today Against Tuition Increases

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Students at UC Berkeley are planning to rally against a series of planned tuition increases on the 50th anniversary of a pivotal event in the school's storied campus activism.

The rally scheduled for Tuesday at noon will take place at Sproul Plaza, where an earlier generation of Berkeley students held a demonstration on Dec. 2, 1964 to protest a campus ban on political advocacy.

That event led to a sit-in of the administration building that resulted in the arrests of 814 people and is considered the climax of the Free Speech Movement.

Current students are using the historic date to challenge the tuition increases UC officials say they will impose in each of the next five years unless the university gets more money from the state.
