Modesto man identified as suspect in Turlock deadly shooting on Lander Avenue

TURLOCK – Police have identified a suspect and victim in a deadly shooting in Turlock early Tuesday morning. 

The scene was near Lander Avenue and Rosewood Drive.

Turlock police confirmed 18-year-old Jose Tamayo-Morales, from Modesto, was found at the scene with at least one gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

Later on Tuesday, police announced an arrest had been made. They identified the suspect as 59-year-old Troy Cannon of Modesto.

Police said Wednesday that detectives determined there was some sort of fight between Cannon and Tamayo-Morales that led to the shooting.

Cannon was identified as a suspect and a vehicle through witnesses and evidence at the scene, police said. Cannon was later tracked down using license plate readers in collaboration with the Modesto Police Department and Ceres Police Department, according to police. 

Cannon was booked into jail on a murder charge, police said.
