TUOLUMNE COUNTY – A Tuolumne County sheriff's deputy shot and killed an armed suspect late Tuesday night in the community of Groveland, authorities said Wednesday.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office said, just after 11 p.m., the deputy pulled over a vehicle with an unreadable license plate near Merrell and Harper roads. Two men were in the vehicle.

At some point during the investigation, one of the men got out of the car and ran. A deputy then started running after the suspect.

It was at this point that the sheriff's office said the suspect pulled out a gun. That's when the shooting occurred. The suspect died and was later identified as Coulterville resident Shawn Karr, 42.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

The sheriff's office said no additional details would be released to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
