STOCKTON — A 23-year-old woman died following a hit-and-run crash near San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton on Thursday night, police said.

The Stockton Police Department said the woman was walking when she was hit near the sidewalk in front of the Delta College sign at Pacidic and West Yokuts avenues.

She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where she later died, police said. The San Joaquin County coroner identified the woman as Jazmin Floris.

Police said a suspect, 27-year-old Jamaraqui Burks driving a Tesla, took off but was tracked down and detained a short time later by college police. He was then hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Burks was arrested and booked into jail after being cleared from the hospital for vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and reckless driving, police said.

Pacific Avenue's southbound lanes were expected to be closed for several hours.
