ANTELOPE - A teenager riding his scooter was hit and killed in Sacramento County Monday.

On Monday at around 10:30 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was riding his scooter on the east side sidewalk of Don Julio, north of Poker Lane in Antelope, the CHP says. The boy entered the intersection of Poker Lane, and, for unknown reasons, rode outside the crosswalk and into the path of the SUV. The SUV hit the boy, severely injuring him.

The boy was transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital where he died. He was later identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office as Nathan Daniel Gebreamlak of Sacramento.

At the time of the accident, the SUV had a green light, the CHP says. Investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Gebreamlak was a student at Antelope High. The school's principal, Lindsey Cutts, sent an email to Antelope High families about Gebreamlak's death. Here's an excerpt:

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that we lost a Titan student last night in a tragic accident.

"Nathan Gebreamlak was a student of ours and a member of the Antelope community.  Student tragedies are absolutely heart-wrenching and remind all of us how truly fragile and precious life is.  Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the Gebreamlak family during this time of sorrow.

"If your student needs support, please know that our school counselors and Wellness Center will be available for any student who wants to talk to someone. The Wellness Center and counseling offices are located in the main office at Antelope High School."
