Tahoe-Area Church's Virgin Mary Statue Vandalized

KINGS BEACH (CBS13) – Detectives are investigating after a church's statue of the Virgin Mary was vandalized.

The vandalism took place at the Our Lady of the Lake Church in Kings Beach on Feb. 14. At some point after 7:30 p.m., Placer County Sheriff's detectives say, someone broke off the head and fingers of a Virgin Mary statue at the church. A plaque was also defaced.

Whoever vandalized the statue left the statue's fingers at the scene, but the head has not been found.

Numerous other similar crimes have taken place at churches in Placer and Washoe counties, leading detectives to believe the cases are connected. The FBI is helping local agencies with the investigation.
