Suspect shot by deputies in south Sacramento

SACRAMENTO — A suspect is in the hospital after being shot by sheriff's deputies in the south Sacramento area, authorities said Tuesday night.

It happened at around 8:30 p.m. in the area of Fruitridge and Odea roads.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said gang unit detectives approached a car for a violation, and the passenger fled on foot. Deputies saw the suspect was holding a gun in his hand while running away.

Moments later, the suspect was shot at least once in the torso, deputies said. Deputies recovered a Glock-style handgun and a loaded extended capacity 30-round magazine next to the suspect.

No deputies were injured.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. He will be identified when he is booked into jail.
