Suspect In West Sacramento Drive-By Shooting That Wounded Teen Released

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Stockton man accused of shooting a 13-year-old girl in the head is out of jail after the Yolo County District Attorney's Office dropped the attempted murder charge.

Now, the nightmare continues for the family and 13-year-old Alize Valadez, who will be spending Christmas in the hospital two months after the shooting.

Sonny Martinez, 39, was released after the district attorney's office said there wasn't enough evidence. The case remains open and under investigation and an arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 23 if more evidence is uncovered.

Valadez remains in the hospital, awake, stable, but mentally damaged.

"Like a vegetable," said her sister Bianca Valadez. "She can't eat, she can't talk, can't get out of bed."

She's convinced Martinez is involved in some way.

"He gets to walk home scot free and spend Christmas with his family while we get to spend it and the hospital with her," she said.

Police say Alize was hit in the head by a bullet in her West Sacramento home in a drive-by shooting.
