Suspect Fires At Officers, Deputies After Chase That Started In Turlock
TURLOCK (CBS13) – The latest on an officer-involved shooting in Merced County:
12:40 p.m.
Turlock police are releasing more information about the chase that ended in with officers and deputies exchanging gunfire with a suspect near Merced.
The chase began after detectives were serving a search warrant at a home along the 300 block of N. Thor Street connected to a Oct. 2016 homicide investigation. Detectives saw a person of interest put a rifle case in the trunk of his car.
Detectives tried to pull the man over, but he wouldn't yield. The chase didn't stop until his car was disabled in Merced.
The man then got out of his car with an assault-style weapon and started shooting at officers and deputies from Merced and Turlock. He was stopped after officers returned fire and hit him.
He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated, but has since been released to police custody and has been booked at Merced County Jail.
The man has been identified as 41-year-old Turlock resident Kevin Mayhew.
Deputies say numerous firearms were found in Mayhew's car, and more evidence was found in his home.
8:56 a.m.
A driver is in police custody following a pursuit with officers who tried to serve a search warrant in Turlock.
Investigators say they went to a home near Hawkeye Avenue and Quincy Road just before 8 p.m. Thursday and saw the person of interest leaving the area.
Officers followed the car into Merced County, where eventually the vehicle became disabled. That's when investigators say gunshots were exchanged between the driver, officers and Merced County sheriff's deputies.
That driver was hit and taken to a hospital. He's expected to recover.
No officials were hurt in the incident.
Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect.
