Stockton Police Investigating In-Custody Death

STOCKTON (CBS13) - Stockton police are investigating how a suspect died while in their custody on Monday.

Around 9 p.m., officers pulled a vehicle over along El Dorado and Clay Streets for what they say was a routine traffic stop. Soon after, the suspect, a 28-year-old Hispanic man, tried to get away from officers and fought with them. Officers eventually subdued the suspect a stun gun, according to Ofc. Joe Silva, a Stockton Police Department spokesperson.

The suspect became unresponsive and police began CPR.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead.

Sergeant Matthew Garlick and Officer Lucas Woodward, who are assigned to the traffic section, were involved in the incident and have been placed on three-day paid administrative leave.
