Stockton CHP Motorcycle Officer Injured In Crash

LINDEN (CBS/AP) - A Stockton CHP officer suffered major injuries in a crash in San Joaquin County on Monday.

The crash happened around 8:20 a.m. on Highway 26 west of Murray Road in the town of Linden. The uniformed officer was riding his CHP motorcycle towards a crash involving an overturned big rig.

Officer Evan May had lights and sirens on as he pulled into the westbound lane of Highway 26 to pass a truck ahead of him going the same direction. As he did so, the driver turned to the left in front of the officer to enter a private driveway. The officer hit the left front side of the truck and landed on the shoulder of the road.

May was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with major injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

CHP Officer James Smith says May was responding to an overturned big rig in the area at the time of the crash.

The crash is under investigation. The 21-year-old driver of the pickup has not been charged.

Linden is 12 miles east of Stockton.
