State Lottery Hits New Sales Record At $6.3 Billion

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The California Lottery says it collected a record $6.3 billion in the last fiscal year, up nearly 15 percent from the previous record of $5.5 billion set a year earlier.

Officials said Monday that lottery profits totaled $1.5 billion in 2015-16. That money will be divided among schools.

The bulk of the lottery's revenue comes from scratch-off games, which comprised about $7 of every $10 the lottery collected.

Lottery officials say Powerball ticket sales were boosted by large jackpots, including the $1.6 billion haul in a January drawing. Other games, including Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot, also saw higher sales.
