Spike Strips Help Stop Suspect In High-Speed Chase

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – An overnight police chase reached speeds up to 120 miles per hour before ending near Sacramento State.

Sacramento Police say it started around 2 a.m. when officers responded to reports of shots fired in North Sacramento at Harris Avenue and High Street.

A car sped away when officers got to the scene, prompting police to pursue the car.

The chase circled around Sacramento for about fifteen miles, and at one point the suspect turned off his lights.

Freeway speeds reached 120 mph and slowed to mid-90s on surface streets.

"It's veteran officers. They're familiar with the area, speeds, traffic conditions, the amount of vehicle traffic on the roadways," Lt. Brian Ellis said.

The chased ended when the suspect hit spike strips at Carlson Drive and Monalee Avenue.

Police arrested 42-year-old Antonio Perez. Officers say they did not find a weapon with him and it's not clear if the initial call of a shooting is related to why Perez ran.
