SMUD Crews Preparing For High Winds In Storm Coming Later This Week
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento Municipal Utility District crews spent much of Tuesday preparing for a strong storm moving in late on Wednesday night.
While they don't have a crystal ball to predict the damage the storm will bring, they're encouraging people to do their part to reduce the risks.
"We plan for events like this all year round. All the time," said spokesman Chris Capra.
The storm is expected to pack wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and rain totals exceeding three inches in the Sacramento area.
SMUD recommends people scoop up leaves and debris to reduce storm drain clutter, as well as putting away holiday ornaments and lightweight objects in your yards. If possible, an arborist should be consulted to see how stable trees and branches are.
Most importantly, they want to make sure you have a backup plan ready if the lights go out.
"Battery-operated things are very important," he said. "So, things like flashlights, radios. Keep the cellphone charged."
It's also good to keep some food ready that you can prepare if the lights go out.
"Have some bottled water and a manual can opener," he said. "Have some canned food you can go to if you have to."
SMUD also plans to ramp up its customer service center so it can take customer calls.
"We're ready for this," Capra said. "We're all hands on deck and this is what we do for a living."
