Shots Fired In Standoff After Pursuit In Southern California

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- Orange County authorities arrested a man who fired several shots during a vehicle chase and then held police at bay during a four-hour standoff from his car.

Santa Ana police Sgt. Kanan Blake says the suspect ran red lights and drove in circles on surface streets during the pursuit Saturday night that stretched from Santa Ana to Fountain Valley.

At one point, the suspect rolled down a window and fired several shots, but Blake said it was unclear whether he was aiming at officers.

Police used a spike strip to stop the car but the suspect refused to drop his weapon and surrender, even after officers used a smoke bomb and water from a fire truck to force him out.

City News Service says the man eventually gave himself up around 3 a.m. Sunday. He was not identified.
