Modesto police investigating shooting that killed 1 man
MODESTO - One person is dead and three people are arrested after a shooting in west Modesto on Wednesday morning.
Modesto police tell CBS13 that around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, police were called out to Monticello Lane just south of West Hatch Road on reports of a man being shot.
At the scene, officers found a man inside a vehicle and suffering from at least one gunshot, they say. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Emmanuel Gomez, was following three suspects who burglarised his neighbor's vehicle. As the suspects fled, one fired multiple rounds at the victim and struck him at least once.
This caused Mr. Gomez to crash his truck into a nearby orchard on Monticello Lane. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment but later died.
An investigation into the shooting has identified 20-year-old Deshawn Austin as the shooter. He was arrested and charged with homicide, being armed with a firearm while committing a felony, and burglary.
There were also two other juveniles aged 16 years old who were arrested and charged with burglary.
Modesto is the county seat of Stanislaus County and is located approximately 68 miles south of Sacramento in the Central Valley.
