Shooting outside bar leaves 1 dead in Sacramento's Greenhaven neighborhood

Gunman remains at large after deadly shooting outside Sacramento bar

SACRAMENTO – An investigation is underway after a shooting in Sacramento's Greenhaven neighborhood left one person dead early Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of The Trap, Sacramento's oldest dive bar located at the corner of Riverside Boulevard and 43rd Avenue.

Before officers got to the scene, dispatchers were alerted that the shooting victim – a 21-year-old man later identified as Benjamin Sapp – was rushed to the hospital by a good Samaritan. Officers responded to the hospital where they confirmed he died from his injuries.

Mariah Lukenbill is the owner of The Trap. She heard the fighting outside her business.

"It was really scary," Lukenbill said. "There were four men, they were all kind of in the passenger seat of this guy's car, trying to pull him out."

When Lukenbill saw a gun, she ran back inside for cover.

"As soon as I got in there, moments later, [I] heard two gunshots go off," she said. "Obviously, I was in shock."

Brookfield Private School is near where the shooting happened. Police said the shooting did not involve the school and they did not give the school orders to go on lockdown.

Community activist Berry Accius is calling for more work to stop gun violence. Citywide statistics show violent crime is down.

"There's not a message that's getting clear to someone's head to say, 'Nowhere will we have someone being shot down in cold blood in the middle of the afternoon,' " Accius said. "Yes, there are levels of improvement, but we have to do a lot more."

Exactly what led up to the shooting is unclear. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to investigate the shooting.

A witness told CBS13 they saw the suspect grab a necklace off the victim's neck after he was shot.

No details about a suspect have been released at this time.
