Senior Moments: Second Chance Tour

By Frank Luna

A few years back I played with a regular foursome of guys once a week.

As most golfers may do, after a flubbed shot one might drop another ball and take a second practice shot.

We always joked that we should add up all the second practice shot strokes and start the Second Chance Tour and probably score pretty well.

The Senior Tour might be considered a second chance tour with all the former big names on the PGA tour given a second chance at that fleeting glory.

Several former PGA tour players have taken full advantage including Colin Montgomerie who finally won his first USGA Championship last year after coming so close in the US Open tying for 2nd three times.

Sacramento's own Kevin Sutherland became the first player to shoot a 59 on the Senior Tour and two-time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer has racked up 24 wins.

A great opportunity for them all but what about the lesser known players looking for their second chance?

The qualifiers in the US Senior Open this year are realizing the ultimate second chance dream just by earning their way into the tournament.

A typical player looking for his little taste of glory is Mike Keymont, a golf instructor from Orlando Florida.

He had a storied college career, rooming with Paul Azinger, qualified for a couple of PGA tour events and kicked around the mini tours.

A successful PGA professional golf instructor, Mike continues to remain active in competitive golf and managed to qualify for this years US Senior Open at Del Paso Country Club.

This is the ultimate dream come true and you can't help but root for all the amateur and aspiring pros that walk the course with golf's legends.

The best second chance anyone could ask for.
