Senior Moments: Gearing Up For The Open

By Frank Luna

Ready or not, here they come. The worlds greatest golfers over 50 are heading to Sacramento this week for the US Senior Open at Del Paso Country Club.

I'm ready too, as I've volunteered as a Marshall for the Open, something I'll be blogging about throughout the week.

Volunteer is a loose term in this case because it cost around $100, but it is well worth the expense considering this includes all week access, meals and some pretty cool gear.

I received a couple of nice golf shirts, a hat and a very nice wind jacket, a value that already exceeds the volunteer cost.

Orientation a few weeks ago revealed the level of dedication the USGA and the Del Paso Country Club have put into this important event.

With over 2,500 volunteers, it seems the Sacramento golf community has turned out in force to support arguably the biggest sporting   event in this area.

I'll be marshalling the 11th hole a few days this week. And to prepare, I've been watching training videos provided by the USGA.

It's hard to imagine organizing an event like this and handling all the  volunteers without the help of the internet.

All communication training and notifications are done through the website. How was in done before the web?

So far, I've been impressed with the organization and professionalism of the USGA and Del Paso Country Club. Here's hoping the week is both successful and memorable.
