San Joaquin Delta College Player Kicked Off Team Following Domestic Violence Arrest
STOCKTON (CBS13) — A football player at San Joaquin Delta College is accused of a violent incident on campus at a time when domestic violence has been a hot-button issue in the NFL.
Officer Jim Bock says police arrested Javaun Young at the Budd Athletic Center.
"The two were in a very loud verbal argument and the male threw her phone against a wall, she went to pick it up, and another verbal argument ensued, and then he pushed her down into the ivy and when she tried to get up he pushed her again into a shopping cart," he said.
Young was a walk-on player, according to Athletic Director Dr. Daryl Arroyo. He says the college didn't recruit Young, and he sat on the bench for all the games this season.
"He was dismissed from the team yesterday after the incident occurred," he said.
Arroyo says as of now, coaches, the athletic department and the school administration decide on punishment for students athletes who are arrested, and it's on a case-by-case basis.
"There are some things about expectations from our student athletes behavior but there isn't anything specifically about if the student athlete gets arrested this is what happens," he said.
Police say the woman wasn't hurt, so Young only faces a misdemeanor charge. But the incident has college administrators taking another look at the ever-growing, controversial topic of domestic violence.
"Department manuals are always evolving and changing and there's always going to be new things that you're thinking 'this needs to go into the manual' so this may be one of those things that needs to go into the manual," Arroyo said.
Sacramento City College says it deals with student-athlete arrests on a case-by-case basis, while Sac State says a student facing a felony charge is suspended immediately.
