San Francisco Swears In First Female Sheriff
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco has sworn in its first female sheriff.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports law-enforcement veteran Vicki Hennessy was sworn in Friday by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who in 1978 became the first female mayor in San Francisco history.
Feinstein says swearing in the first woman sheriff in the history of the city is "a very big thing."
Hennessy officially took over the San Francisco Sheriff's Department at noon Friday.
She unseated incumbent Ross Mirkarimi, who came under scrutiny after releasing a Mexican national in the country illegally who was accused in the July fatal shooting of a San Francisco woman.
