SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Zoo says "Josephine" the armadillo has been found safe. She was found only 192 feet away from where she was missing.

On Thursday, the zoo announced that the six-banded armadillo went missing from the zoo's interpretive center. Staff immediately began searching the park, its perimeter, and nearby Land Park, they said in a statement Friday.

Then on Friday, she turned up just 192 feet away from the interpretive center.

'We are happy to report that Josephine is healthy and safely back in the Interpretive Center," said a zoo spokesperson.

Josephine was examined by zoo staff and given a clean bill of health.

The zoo says six-banded armadillos are native to the grasslands of South America and can be active during the day or night. Excellent diggers, these armadillos will readily shelter underground. They have poor vision but have an excellent sense of smell. They typically eat small insects.

In 2018, a bongo calf was able to leap over a fence and escape its enclosure. The zoo then evacuated all visitors and corraled the animal back into its designated area. The incident resulted in higher fencing around the enclosure to prevent it from happening again.
