Sacramento To Vote On Ballot Initiative To Decide Pot Tax
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sacramento voters will decide whether to use tax dollars from marijuana cultivation to pay for services for kids.
The Sacramento Bee reports that the Sacramento City Council on Tuesday voted to put a ballot initiative before voters in June that would ask voters to impose a special 5 percent tax on future cultivation.
If the June initiative passes, the council would set earmark funds for programs including early childhood education, arts and cultural activities, academic tutoring, healthy living programs or gang diversion.
The tax would replace the normal 4 percent business tax and is projected to generate $5 million annually. The initiative will need two-thirds voter support to pass.
