Sacramento State Students, Neighbors On Edge After Man Found Shot To Death
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento State students and neighbors are on edge after a man was found shot to death near a popular American River bike trail and less than a mile from campus.
The man was found underneath the Howe Avenue bridge, near La Riviera Drive.
Neighbors say they're having lots of trouble with homeless in the area. What's interesting is police took a report of shots fired around 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Responding officers found no evidence of a shooting. The body was discovered on Thursday.
Sitting on her patio on Wednesday night, Kendra Jose heard the shots.
"Like one gun emptying out, and another gun emptying out," she said. "And a whole bunch of shots after that one too."
The sound of more gunshots woke Laurie Hunt up out of a dead sleep.
Hours after that, Sacramento Police discovered the body of a man in his 30s off of a bike path in the thick underbrush near the American River. Police say he had multiple gunshot wounds.
"He was a homeless man, just like we are," said Kathleen Nicholas, who is homeless.
She says she's known the victim for two years, a homeless man named Quincy. She doesn't know who would hurt him.
"Please find out who did this to him, 'cuz we're scared—we're scared, 'cuz we're this close, and it happened right there," she said.
Sacramento State students are unnerved too. Some use the bike path just a half mile from campus and many live in apartments close by.
Neighbors say issues with the homeless seem to be worsening.
"It's been the past month, really bad," Hunt said.
She points to multiple recent break-ins, and that's part of the reason she isn't shocked a shooting happened so close to home.
"I hear people screaming over here," she said. "I hear people yelling and there's no one there, so it seems like we have a lot of angry people over there, so, I'm not surprised by this. Sad, but not surprised."
Police say they're not aware of any major increase of crime in the area.
